Yes, we need changes indeed, but establishing gambling industry is NOT the only way to change the local economy.
To develop gambling industry or not has been the most controversial issue in Matsu in recent days. I used to live in Matsu before my junior high, and now I am a government-supported medical student who will come back to Matsu for medical service in the future. Although I haven’t reach the legal age to get the vote, I think I am still qualified to discuss this issue.
From my point of view toward the economic development in Matsu, I prefer ecotourism to gambling industry. Although both of the two strategies would prosper the local economy by drawing visitors to Matsu, there are so many different effects which were shocked to the local society. First, Matsu is a beautiful island where tourism is a potential industry. If local government allows the development of gambling industry, it must provide lots of buildings for the gambling-business and destroy the local natural sceneries. We all know that destructions will come with developments, and Beigan airport, which destroyed the priceless natural beauty in the Hou-Ao beach, is the best example to prove that. On the other hand, if the authority decides to develop ecotourism, it not only conserves the nature but also will bring visitors in this island to promote local economy. Second, gambling is an addicted activity. Not until gamblers win back their money will they give up. Gamblers may linger in the casinos for days and nights, bothering the residents’ life. Unlike gambling industry, ecotourism will make less influence on local inhabitants and environment. Visitors coming for ecotourism are more willing to consider whether they will harm the natural environment, and trying hard to protect the original look of the local area.
Therefore, I think that gambling industry is not the only choice to boost the economy in Matsu. Conserving natural beauty and developing ecotourism are much better for Matsu in my personal opinion.

With your qualifications, it would be helpful if you could provide some thoughts and solutions on the current airport situation being unwelcoming to ecotourists and the general population. Also, it would be helpful if you read scholarly publications regarding gambling addiction. After you have done so, those research articles will show that your second point is moot. I find it amusing that you are imagining that developments will be targeting the most beautiful beauty that Matsu has to offer, with purposes to simply destroy.

我們一再重申，公投與博弈法都是民主制度下的行為與規章，應該在公平公正公開的平台來進行。
我們很失望，如此乾淨純樸的馬祖，竟在7月7日前，被這些外來人士及團體汙染了！
